For me the 'Cathedral Of Flyers' was one of the most anticipated albums of the year. And finally on 28th of November 2009 it was officially released on ParaLucid. Nagual Art is a project with a very unique and distinct approach to dark ambient. Its music is a specific mixture of slow and clear melodic layers, symphonic orchestrations, haunting soundscapes and a great number of various sound decorations such as occasionally appearing rhythmic parts, blurry and strange pieces of speech, in other words sounds that only Nagual Art is able to catch, preserve and disclose. Its compositions are always shaping an ambience where artificial humane approaches to life such as time and logic have no meaning and no power. The 'Cathedral Of Flyers' is a trip to a world which a word such a cathedral could barely describe as it presumes some physical boundaries. However the word flyers is absolutely enough to explain the music in the album. While listening you are constantly flying in the ambience the sounds and their collaboration are shaping. You are flying just like an autumn leaf that is carried around by the wind. In this case the winds that lead you are many and different. Air of desolated spaces meets hundreds unknown, uncountable whispers. Winds of ancient air that has never been moist are destroying the already shattered and fragile hands of evil clocks. Currents are exchanging emotions, charging this newborn atmosphere with new objects for observation, interpretation and exploration. However this is just a quick flashback of what happened to me in the cathedral of flyers, an experience that was long awaited and still not fully enjoyed due to the depth of this fine piece of sound art. An experience that was also prolonged by the bonus songs attached to the release which unlike any other bonus material to an album sound quite homogeneous. If the release itself is an engulfing and obsessive voyage in the depths of Nagual Art?s imagination, the bonus material is like a timid and stealthy walk into all that is left undisclosed and therefore undiscovered by the one inside the cathedral of flyers.

Yeah, nice release!
However I have a few remarks on the mixing:
With some tracks (mainly 1 & 2) the mixing sounds a bit "blurred", evoking a somehow "uneasy" feeling. It's hard to tell why and maybe it's just a very personal thing of mine. It somehow "feels" like sometimes it's missing some frequencies in the middle frequency range. I suppose that is a result of the human way of listening harmonics of a sound and I'd guess on some tracks some of the lower harmonics are missing.
If you take the (awesome!) track "Cathedral of Flyers" you can hear what I mean. The vocals and drums add just the frequencies I've been missing before.
Prayer For Pazuzu has some very very (!) annoying high frequencies. I'm sorry but I had to skip it, sounded like my ears where bleeding
My favorite tracks on this album:
Vision II
Cathedral Of Flyers
Vision III
Is this your own voice that can be heard on some of the tracks (e.g. Cathedral Of Flyers)?

Hey, I am proud you noticed it!
Well, it sounds like that but it is not a failure! You know, to explain why it should even sound like that, I have to tell you something about the story behind the album shortly.
The Flyers are parasites. They eat our awareness, they are beings of pure energy and not physical. For them, the humans awareness is the perfect food to survive.
So, they handle us like slaves and we even do not notice it. We live like "underwater"... or maybe like in a dream. We cannot look behind all the things.
So, the protagonist of this story slowly realizes this fact and in the track "Cathedral of Flyers" he has a short moment were he is able to look behind this big lie and is able to be without any parasites and slavery.
This is why only this tracks fills the full range of frequencies. All the others are even like "underwater"... "uneasy" like you wrote.
Of course, this does not really fulfill the listening pleasure but in the end it must be like that. I maximized this effect in the track "Deepest Hell", you can imagine why...
I am sorry for the high frequencies in "Prayer for Pazuzu". Are they really so bad? I didn't notice it... Heard it on several monitors, in the car, kitchen radio and anywhere else... But if you do not like it and gives pain to your ears it is not far away of the tracks' topic ;-)
Zitat Is this your own voice that can be heard on some of the tracks (e.g. Cathedral Of Flyers)?
No. It is a man called Hermann Voges. Some may know him from his former band "Engel Wider Willen".
Again, thank you a lot!

It is this peak at ~ 15000 Hz that prevents me from listening:

Maybe the frequency is above your ear listening spectrum.
Also interesting is the peak at 20000 Hz, looks like some error, but maybe it's caused by compression.

Interesting...
That's when you evoke a demon.
But you are right, I should more use my Level-Meter equipment :-(
Thank you for that! Even when I must laugh, because it reminds me on a Simpsons episode I saw a couple of weeks ago... "I can see my voice! BRRRRRRRR" :-)
PS: Just now I realized that one of my artwork photo is 666 kb. I must go... |

Indeed - it's Adobe Audition and it also has other very nice features besides the frequency analyzer.

Offtopic: Damn... you are using Adobe Audition, I'm still in the Cool Edit Pro 2 era
Volador, thanks for sharing the idea behind the album!!! Not that I'm not satisfied with my own interpretation but was good to know what you created. |

Wavelab ( even the old versions) have really trusty analyzers too. But the best analyzers of the universe are your own ears.
@On topic, I will check this release asap.
